POLITICS WITH ESCH: Mike Huckabee
Welcome to the second edition of Politics with Esch. This has been a very important week on the political front, as well as an impressive week for the Eisentower30.com. The website has now been in operation for the better part of two months and has seen a 300% rise in readership over the past 3 days. We would like to thank you, the readers, for the support thus far and in the future. Everyone is welcome here. Tell a friend about us.
The overall theme in this political race has no doubt been summed up in one word: Change. As important as it is for America to take a new direction toward its political goals, we also are trying to spice things up here as well. This week there will be a couple of new features, which I will update John Edwards' profile with as well. The first is a campaign slogan (which will be the work of Tower and yours truly) and the second includes links to websites where you can find out more about the candidate. Now, the moment that we have all been waiting for (or not) let's meet the next president of the United States of America. Mike Huckabee.

Mike Huckabee
Political Affiliation: Republican
Age: 52
Family: Janet (Wife), John Mark, David, Sarah
Home State: Arkansas
Current Status in Primary (R): 2nd, 18.9%
Slogan: I Heart Huckabee. Catchy movie title. Now serving a greater good.
Overview:
The United States of America wants change! If you disagree, leave. Every news channel in America, as well as each politician, has been shouting it from their soapboxes since Bush started his second term. The war in Iraq has lasted longer than the current president predicted, our national debt is through the roof, the dollar has the worst exchange rate in decades, and the health care system has been "irrevocably broken," to quote Huckabee. This is an election where change is wanted, and very much needed, on several platforms. When it comes to change look no further than Mike Huckabee. He is a candidate that is conservative in most core values such as second amendment rights, right to life, and gay marriage. However, Gov. Huckabee wants to, and will, change many issues for the better. His support of the FairTax plan, proposal for energy independence, and education reform are just a few areas that will be addressed during his administration.
Huckabee's Big Issues:
Although I would like to write about his views on every issue under the sun, for the sake of time, I'll touch on the two biggest. The first is his tax plan, which will benefit America on several platforms. Second is faith because this part "scares" some people (it makes him an even better candidate in my eyes).
Taxes:
You want change? Here it is. It's called the FairTax, and instead of trying to explain the many intricacies of the plan in a very short time I will hit the big topics. The idea has been around for quite some time now. The plan was proposed in a book, which I highly recommend, and more information can be found at www.fairtax.org.
The basis of the plan is that all taxes currently in use will be discarded. Personal federal, corporate federal, gift, estate, capital gains, alternative minimum, Social Security, Medicare, and self-employment taxes, all gone. They will be replaced by a 23% consumption tax. You may ask, why? I think the easiest way to show what this tax will do is to look at ways it will change current problems for the better.
How about we start with money that the government never actually sees. That's right, the taxes of the common man are higher than they need to be because the underground economy doesn't pay taxes at all (If John Edwards really cared about the middle class he would support the FairTax). Think about how many millions, actually billions, of dollars change hands "under the table," the government never sees a dime. From drug trade, to vendors on street corners, to a neighborhood kid mowing lawns, all not taxed (most times). Under the FairTax, when the drug dealer buys his mansion or his Ferrari, guess what? That money is taxed now. Beautiful.
Let's look for instance at the big businesses that are taking their jobs out of the country. The United States Government, especially the Democrats, keep pushing to increase corporate taxes. Well, when corporations pay more taxes the money doesn't come from the corporation. Instead, the big business raises prices, decreases the amount of benefits to their employees, and cuts jobs. That is how the tax gets paid BY THE CONSUMER. So, we eliminate that tax altogether. Now the businesses come back to the United States because they can compete without crazy price hikes and without paying taxes out the rear.
For the everyday working man, or woman, the FairTax will enable you to take home your ENTIRE paycheck. You won't be taxed until you make purchases. You may ask, what about those who are very poor? How can they pay 23% tax on food and supplies and still survive? I have an idea, let's issue checks to cover all taxes up to the poverty line. Ok, it wasn't really my idea, but I agree with it. Every American family will get a check to cover taxes on necessities of life up to the poverty line. So, in effect, the tax is somewhat progressive and not a flat tax because people who annually spend only to the poverty line will have a monthly prebate check that will essentially cover all taxes for that family. Beautiful.
The following data has been taken from www.fairtax.org so that you can get an idea of how much this will benefit the country.
-The FairTax rate of 23% on a total taxable consumption base of $11.244 trillion will generate $2.586 trillion dollars. $358 billion more than the taxes it replaces.
-Disposable personal income is higher than if the current tax system remains in place: 1.7% in year 1, 8.7% in year 5, and 11.8% In year 10.
-Consumption increases by 2.4% in the first year, which grows to 11.7% by the tenth year than it would be if the current system were to remain in place.
These are just a few of the results of scholarly research conducted regarding the FairTax. If you have any questions regarding this plan I would be happy to answer them through the comment feature. This is truly a great opportunity for our country!!!
Faith:
After my first post I received a comment that said Huckabee gave a "scary speech." I couldn't help but wonder what this meant so I clicked on the link and watched the video. Let me just say that any short news clip can be taken out of context and I honestly don't believe that Mike Huckabee is going to Washington to start amending the Constitution for fun. This is what I take from Huckabee. Above all things he is a man of faith. He believes that every decision he makes is the will of his God. Taken directly from his website, "My faith is my life- It defines me. I do not separate my faith from my personal and professional lives." This is not a radical belief system. Instead it is a long lost traditional belief system that I admire. I once read a quote that said "saying words is the easiest thing to do in the world, the hardest is living those words every day." A man who can commit to something so fully would surely commit to this country in the same manner. To conclude, although Gov. Huckabee holds beliefs he can also respect the American citizen's right to his or her own view. He says according to the first amendment that faith should not be prohibited or preferred, and that he has much more respect for "an honest atheist than a disingenuous believer." Strong values and commitment to a cause show signs of a strong person, and in this case, also a strong president.
Prediction: Placing second in South Carolina put him in a tough spot. The race is still open and there is no doubt in my mind that Huckabee will be on the Republican ticket either as the nominee or the vice presidential hopeful. McCain/Huckabee would be a strong ticket against the Dems.
