POLITICS WITH ESCH: Barack Obama
I'll begin by apologizing for not getting this week's profile done until now. I wasn't feeling good last night and have been incredibly busy. This weekend was an important step for the Democratic party as Barack Obama defeated Hillary Clinton by an astounding 29%. I don't think there were many people out there expecting to see that result. Evidently the voters of South Carolina didn't want to feel like this! Before I start on Obama I would like to apologize to DD Eisenberg and Donna Shalala. I hope our differing political views will not get in the way of our friendship. Also, please realize that all jokes regarding Mrs. Clinton are in good fun and not to be taken as a personal attack. Ladies and gentleman, I give you Barack Obama.

Barack Obama
Political Affiliation: Democrat
Age: 46
Family: Michelle (wife), Malia (9), Sascha (6)
Home State: Illinois
Current Status in Primary (D): 2nd, 32%
Slogan: Stand for Change
Overview:
In modern day politics the winner is often times the most ruthless, go get 'em, hit 'em below the belt politician. How can a candidate win the nomination, let alone the presidency, without doing so? Obama is the man who thinks he has the answer. Respectful politics has been the theme of the Obama campaign from day one. He told Newsweek that he will not kneecap anyone and he will not get personal. Barack Obama is most certainly a man of integrity. Recently the first family of the Democratic party, the Kennedys (no offense to the Clintons), went public with their endorsement of Obama saying that "Barack inspires [us] — it's that simple." This is a HUGE hit for the Clinton campaign and has me a little concerned. There are only two reasons that I can think that this Ted Kennedy, far left endorsement would not go to Hillary: Either Obama is much more liberal than he lets on, which I don't think is the case, or Sen. Clinton's campaign is falling apart at the seams, which I hope is true. Either way Obama has gained a significant amount in the polls over the last three days and I believe he will be the Democratic nominee for the presidency.
Obama's Big Issue:
Education:
I was recently talking to a future teacher and I couldn't help but be intrigued when she said that Obama's education reform was no good. I had to find out more. Here is Barack Obama on education.
Sen. Obama believes that the flaw in our education system begins from the time the child is brought into the world, or as he puts it, the zero to five years. The problem lies in the number of American children who do not get the care they need prior to, and are therefore not ready for, kindergarten. Barack acknowledges that a big part of the success of his plan will depend on parents to not only educate but take responsibility for their actions. He stressed in a debate in Nevada that especially African American men must be a part of the lives of their children. Obama's plan is to increase the number and quality of early education programs and preschools so that children will be ready to enter kindergarten.
After the early years the education process changes and we must correct fundamental flaws. Barack establishes this with plans to reform the No Child Left Behind Act, reduce the outrageous dropout rate, and pay teachers what they deserve to keep them in the profession. He believes that the NCLB act should not force teachers to prepare students for standardized tests, but instead have others ways to measure progress and readiness for college. In the reforming of the law he wants to put a greater emphasis nationally on math and science which is so important throughout the world, America is falling behind in this area. To cut down on the dropout percentage Barack believes that we need to provide more outreach programs, high quality after school programs, and invest in intervention strategies.
Finally, he believes that the price of higher education must be reduced. The never ending increase in funding a higher education puts too great of a burden on the student and the country. He has proposed a tax that would cover the first two-thirds of most tuitions at public colleges and universities.
Prediction:
Obama brings a brand of "inspirational" politics that our young generation has not seen in its lifetime. His respectful tone and vision of a better future for his and our children is sweeping the nation. President Kennedy once said, "The world is changing. The old ways will not do… It is time for a new generation of leadership." This could not be more true in today's society. I believe that if the young voters keep turning out then Barack Obama will win the nomination. The only thing that people really question is his experience. I ask you this. Does Clinton have much more??? She has been in the Senate a little longer, but what else? Does being the first lady really count? Maybe in this case, after all the Clinton administration was a tandem presidency, and don't expect it to be any different this time if Hillary is elected. Still a stretch in my opinion.
