Peacocks Are Selfish
Watching an episode of one of my favorite shows, The Colbert Report, I got to thinking...Why is there no daily version of SNL's Weekend Update? Especially given the popularity of news parody shows such as The Daily Show and Colbert, why has the Weekend Update portion of SNL not gone solo? We've all seen the countless SNL skits that have jumped to the big screen. And while more succeed than fail, the most well-known and consistent part of Saturday Night Live has never left the show. I can only imagine one reason why? Monopoly.
Comedy Central seems to be the only platform on which a show like Weekend Update could thrive. Given that understanding, one can only assume those peacocks at NBC are keeping a stranglehold on the popular "skit." Viacom owns Comedy Central. Viacom likes things their way or no way at all. So I can't see a joint effort here to get a great idea out there. But isn't that what this is? A great idea. We love Daily and Colbert, but it is primarily political news. So, why not find a way to get at least a Weekend Update-style show in that late-night programming. Given the right cast, I'd watch. How about signing on Chevy Chase? Although I believe he is hiding in some obscure place where nobody can find him so that would be difficult.
